Swim Meet 101

Swim meet nights are long, but so much fun! It is a great way for our swimmer to show what they have been practicing.

Mock Meet:

A mock meet is a practice swim meet. It is very important for families and athletes to attend the Mock Meet. The mock meet serves several purposes

  • To give swimmers a chance to experience a swim meet.
  • To allow parents to learn the volunteer roles prior to the first meet.
  • To allow the coaches to gather times that they will use to place swimmers in the first meet.

Meet Days:

When to arrive:    Home Meets 4:45

Away Meets 5:15

When you arrive at the pool the first thing you want to do is find the check in location. Swimmers will be checked in and given a marking on their arm. We utilize the child's initials and age to help kid pushers and timers.
The meet is usually over around 9:30pm. It is important to note if the meet must be postponed due to inclement weather it will be held at 6:00pm the next night.

What to bring:

  • It can be helpful to bring a lawn chairs as deck furniture is limited.
  • Towels (extra towels are always helpful, the kids are in and out of the water so much that towels can stay wet by the end of the meet)
  • Goggles
  • Swim caps
  • T-shirts
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Games, cards, or other small items to keep your swimmer occupied between their events.
  • A concession stand will be available for dinner, drinks, and snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who Decides Who We Swim Against? We participate in the Tarheel Swim Association (TSA). They assign the meets based on the level of competitiveness of each team.

What age group does my child swim in? The swimmers age as of June 1st determines what age group the child swims with. Coaches do have the opportunity to swim children up if they deem it appropriate.

How Do We Win?
Each swim meet consists of 66 events - 20 relays and 46 individual events. Each event may have multiple heats depending on the number of swimmers in each age group. For relays, only the first-place team in Heat 1 earns points - 5 points for first place. For individual events, points are awarded to the fastest three swimmers in Heat 1 - first place earns 5 points, second place earns 3 points, and third place earns 1 point. At the end of the night, all points are added up and the team with the most points wins!

Why Do Some Swimmers Get Ribbons Immediately While Others Don't? Swimmers in Heat 1 (also called Main Event) are competing for points. Heat 1 swimmers will earn place ribbons (1st - 6th). These will be distributed at a practice a couple of days after the meet. 10 and Under swimmers who aren't in Heat 1 will receive participation ribbons and/or heat winner ribbons. Away teams may have different policies for participation ribbons.

How many Heat 1 events can a child swim? 6 & under swimmers can swim in 2 main events, all others are allowed to swim in 3 main events.

What Does It Mean To Be Disqualified? Each meet has two Stroke & Turn Judges (one from each team) to evaluate the legality of each swimmer's strokes. Common disqualifications include using scissor kicks during the butterfly or breaststroke, not touching the wall with two hands for butterfly or breaststroke, starting too early on a relay, touching the bottom of the pool, and turning over before the swimmer touches the wall on backstroke. The coaches will work with the swimmer throughout the season to improve their strokes and reduce disqualifications. Swimmers who swim in Heat 1 and are disqualified do not earn place ribbons.
